Christchurch picked up their second win of the season in an eventful and enjoyable game.

Early on, UEA won a short corner which became two, then three. Kate sped out to the last of these and was rewarded with a point-blank direct hit just above the knee. Reassured by a UEA medic that she hadn’t broken anything (thank you, medic, if you’re reading), she was able to continue, albeit uncomfortably. At the next short, without Kate’s usual speed, UEA were able to crack a fearsome shot right into the corner to go one up. Christchurch had several good chances to draw level before their luck turned when Lizzy caught a defender in possession, stole the ball and advanced unchallenged into the D where she drew the keeper and slotted home. The home sides passing then unlocked the visitors defence for a second time as the ball moved from Jukesy to Lois to Lizzy to Megan who fumbled the ball past the keeper. UEA hit back and as the whistle blew on the half, Christchurch were desperately defending and just holding on to the lead.

The second half began with both teams enjoying periods of control without converting that advantage into goals. That changed mid way through the half, when UEA worked a cross which was cleverly squeaked in at the near post despite close attention from the Christchurch defence. The visitors were now fired up and the momentum seemed to have swung their way but although Christchurch were disappointed to have relinquished the lead, they dug in, defended when they had to and countered when they could. With time ticking down, Melissa won the ball in midfield, found Megan on the wing who dribbled up the field and reverse hit the ball to Lizzy in the D who beat two defenders before finding the goal.  From  the restart, Christchurch looked to see the game out safely but found themselves under extra pressure when Jukesy swung out to try to regain possession only for her mis-timed challenge to earn a yellow card. As she saw the game out from the sidelines, so the remaining ten held out for the last few minutes of the game and three points they were forced to work hard for.

Thanks to Ali Embley for helping us out of a spot before the game- you’re a star.
